How to Transfer a Car Title in Illinois

To introduce a car title in the state of Illinois, it’s a good idea to read these instructions, locate all the appropriate lines on the title, and read any instructions on the title before you start filling in the information.

Enter the following information on the front of your Illinois car title.

  1. Under the words “Assignment of title,” print the buyer’s name and full address (street address, city, state, and zip code).
  2. On the next line, write in the vehicle’s current mileage.
  3. Where it says “Signature(s) of Seller(s),” the seller should sign their name. Note that if two people own the car and are releasing ownership, both people need to sign on the same line.
  4. On the next line, the seller(s) should print their name(s). Next to that, they should print the date the vehicle was sold.
