How to Transfer a Car Title in Rhode Island

To introduce a car title in the state of Rhode Island, it’s a good idea to read these instructions, locate all the appropriate lines on the title, and read any instructions on the title before you start filling in the information.

Turn to the back of your Rhode Island car title and look near the top.

  1. On the first line, the buyer should print their name. Note that if two people purchase the car, both names must fit on the same line. Immediately next to that line is a line where the buyer should print their full address.
  2. Where it says, “I state that the odometer now reads,” print the vehicle’s current mileage.
  3. Where it says “Signature(s) of Seller(s),” the seller(s) should sign their name(s). On the line to the right, they should print the date they’re signing the title. The buyer(s) should sign their name(s) on the line to the right. Next to that is a line where they can write in the date.
  4. Where it says “Handprint name of the seller(s),” the appropriate people should print their name(s). Immediately to the right of that is a line where the buyer(s) can print their name(s).
