How to Transfer a Car Title in South Dakota

To introduce a car title in the state of South Dakota, it’s a good idea to read these instructions, locate all the appropriate lines on the title, and read any instructions on the title before you start filling in the information.

Turn to the back of your South Dakota title and look near the middle of the page.

  1. In the large box that says “Odometer,” enter your vehicle’s current mileage.
  2. Look for a series of colored boxes under the Odometer section. The first one should say “Date of sale.” Fill in the following information where appropriate: Date of sale, the sale price of the vehicle, the value of any trade-in vehicle, and the total price you actually paid for the vehicle. If you traded in a vehicle, you will need to write in the year and make of the car, as well as the serial or South Dakota title number.
  3. Where it says “Printed name of the seller(s),” the seller(s) should write their name(s). Note that if more than one person sells the vehicle, both owners must fit their names on the same line.
  4. On the next line, the seller(s) should sign their name(s).
  5. Under that, the seller should write in their street address.
  6. On the next set of lines, the seller should write their city, state, and zip code in the appropriate places.
  7. To the right of all this information are two lines. On the first, where it says “Hand printed name of purchaser/company name,” the buyer should print their name. On the second line, the purchaser should sign their name. Again, note that if two people are buying the vehicle, they must print and sign their names on the same lines.
