How to Transfer a Car Title in West Virginia

To introduce a car title in the state of West Virginia, it’s a good idea to read these instructions, locate all the appropriate lines on the title, and read any instructions on the title before you start filling in the information.

Turn to the back of your West Virginia title and look at the top of the page.

  1. Enter the sale or trade-in price of the vehicle and the net price. Calculate the tax by multiplying the net cost by 5% (.05) and write that amount where it says “5% tax.” Note that West Virginia charges a flat $25 on vehicles sold for less than $500 (instead of the 5% tax).
  2. On the next line, write in the name and address of the buyer.
  3. Write the mileage in the box under the buyer’s name (no tenths).
  4. On the next line, sign your name, which says “Signature of seller(s).” Print your name where it says, “Printed name(s) of the seller(s).” Write in the date where it says “Date of sale.” Note that if two owners need to sign, you must fit both names on the same line (so write small!).
  5. Have the buyer sign where it says “Signature(s) of the buyer(s).” Have the buyer print their name where it says, “Printed name(s) of the buyer(s).”
