In order to tell the DMV that you sold your vehicle for scrap, you have to file for a release of liability or notice of sale. If you go to your state DMV website you might be able to file online. You'll need the vehicle's VIN, license plate number, date of sale, odometer reading, buyer information, and your signature. This will remove your legal responsibility from the vehicle.
