Here Are The Main Factors Our Junk Car Value Calculator Considers

  • Vehicle weight and size: Larger and heavier vehicles are worth more in scrap than smaller ones because they contain more metal.
  • Metal content: Vehicles that contain higher amounts of aluminum are worth more than similarly sized vehicles that are predominantly made of steel. Aluminum is worth more than steel.
  • Completeness: Whole vehicles will be worth more in scrap than incomplete vehicles because the parts add to the metal weight.
  • Salvageable parts: Cars with salvageable components (catalytic converter, aluminum wheels, engine, and transmission) command higher prices than those without. And newer vehicles are worth more because they will contain more salvageable parts that still have life.
  • Location: Scrap metal prices vary by location due to demand, competition, and proximity to metal recycling ports.
  • Market prices and seasonality: Metal prices change with global supply and demand and tend to rise in the spring and summer months when construction and manufacturing pick up.
  • Paperwork: Having the title increases offers because it makes it easier to verify ownership.
  • Preparation: Metal yards will pay more for vehicles that are drained of fluids and cleaned of debris because that means they won't have to do it.

All of the above factors are taken into account when calculating the scrap value of a vehicle. Your location is used to determine the scrap car price per ton in your area. Then it is multiplied by your vehicle's weight to get a baseline value. From there, the metal content is factored in, with vehicles that contain more aluminum adding to the value. Next, the value of any salvageable parts that can be pulled and resold is accounted for. Then the title is processed for proof of ownership. And lastly, the buyer will pay a premium if the car has been prepared to be scrapped.

We built our scrap car value calculator to do all this at once. It only takes 90 seconds to see the scrap value of your vehicle. You can then use this price to shop around to competing buyers. Happy scrapping!
