Most junk car buyers pay at the time of pickup. Cash payment is common, though some buyers pay by check or electronic transfer. You should receive payment before the tow truck leaves with your vehicle. Never hand over your title or keys without getting paid first.
Common payment methods:
- Cash (most common for smaller transactions)
- Certified or company check
- Electronic payment (Zelle, Venmo, direct deposit)
- Money order
Payment timing to expect:
- Standard: Driver pays when loading the vehicle
- Acceptable: Payment same day via electronic transfer
- Red flag: Payment promised “after processing” or mailed later
If a buyer wants to pay after taking your car, decline. Once the vehicle leaves your property, you lose leverage. Payment-after-pickup arrangements lead to reduced payments, delayed checks, or no payment at all.
When accepting checks, verify the buyer’s legitimacy first. A check from an established business with good reviews is reasonable. A check from an unknown buyer with no reputation is risky.
Confirm payment method and timing when getting your quote. Know exactly when you’ll receive payment before the tow truck arrives.
